If you read SEO news in 2025–2026, you would think traditional search is dead. AI Overviews are eating clicks. ChatGPT is replacing Google. SEO is obsolete.
Let us separate signal from noise.
What Is Actually Happening
AI Overviews (Formerly SGE)
Google now shows AI-generated summaries at the top of many search results. Early panic suggested this would eliminate organic clicks. The data so far tells a more nuanced story:
AI Overviews appear on roughly 15–25% of queries (varies by industry)
They are most common on informational queries, rare on commercial/transactional
Sites cited in AI Overviews often see increased click-through — the overview acts as a featured-snippet-style endorsement
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI-First Search
These platforms are growing but remain tiny compared to Google. Combined, they represent roughly 3–5% of all search traffic. Important for the future, not a replacement today. The playbook: ensure your brand is cited in AI training data by producing authoritative, quotable content.
What Still Works (and Always Will)
Despite the AI panic, the fundamentals have not changed:
Answer the query better than anyone else. AI can summarise but it cannot create original research, first-hand experience, or unique data.
Earn genuine backlinks. AI Overviews cite linked sources. A page with 50 referring domains is more likely to be cited than one with 5.
Technical excellence. Fast, accessible, well-structured pages help both traditional crawlers and AI systems parse your content.
Build a brand people search for. Branded searches are immune to AI Overviews. Nobody types "Nike shoes" into Google and then reads an AI summary instead of clicking the Nike link.
What You Should Actually Do
Do not chase every AI headline. The strategy that works:
Create content AI cannot replicate: original data, expert interviews, unique case studies, interactive tools
Structure for machine readability: clear headings, schema markup, FAQ sections
Monitor your AI Overview presence: track which of your pages get cited in AI Overviews and double down on those topics
Diversify traffic sources: build an email list, invest in your brand, do not rely 100% on Google organic
The Bottom Line
AI is changing how people find information, not what makes information worth finding. Quality, originality, and authority are not going anywhere. The tactics that worked in 2016 (keyword stuffing, link farms, thin content) are already dead. The tactics that work now (deep expertise, genuine value, technical excellence) will survive whatever Google launches next.
